VHAI organized a media advocacy workshop in collaboration with Aparajita Voluntary Health Association of India..

Workshop for Law Enforcement Officials

 Voluntary Health Association of India-Aparajita organized a workshop for the law enforcement officials and did presentation on Cigarette & Other Tobacco Products Act'2003 in the Crime Meeting held on 15th july 2008 by the Police commissioner, Twin City Mr.Bijaya Kumar Sharma at the conference Hall of DCP office, and made the Law Enforcers aware on monitoring provisions of COTPA and how to take actions against legislative violations in their respective areas of Jurisdiction. All the senior level officers including Deputy Commissioner of Police, Khurda district Mr.Himanshu Lal and Deputy Commissioner of Police, Cuttack Mr.Prabeen Kumar were present during the meeting.

Advocate, Mr.Gangadhar Panigrahi, Bhubaneswar Bar Council discussed about the Central Act, its various provisions and constraints in its implementation in a state like Orissa where chewing is prevalent among female. He expressed his concern over growing number of tobacco shops near to schools and colleges and urged for effective implementation so that these young masses will be saved from the clutches of this deadly addiction. Dr.Sanjaya Panda ENT, Head & Neck Surgeon, Acharya Harihar Cancer Research Center emphasized on ill effects of Tobacco on health and various types of cessation measures.

The Commissioner assured to extend all support and cooperation in the creation of Tobacco free environment in all the city police stations and permitted Aparajita to put up "No Smoking" & "Smoke free Area" boards inside all their office premises. Further he requested his officials to give special attention in removing the tobacco shops from all education institutions.

In other context Mr.Shisir Ranjan Dash shared the tobacco control initiative taken by the Collector cum district Magistrate Jagatsinghpur district, Dr.Pramod Kumar Meherda who has gone one step ahead and after lots of persuasion from Aparajita team, how he has sent a circular to the CDMO, PD-DRDA, sub-collector, Executive officer, Paradeep & Jagatsinghpur Municipality, all district level officers, principals of colleges, Block Development officers, Tahasildars, CDPOs, and Headmaster/Head mistress of schools to get involved in this anti tobacco movement initiated by VHAI-Aparajita and creation of smoke free public institution prohibiting both spitting and smoking in all public offices in the district.
