Smoke Free International Cricket In Brabati Stadium - Smoking Banned In Public Places

 No more suffocating smoke, no crowd of tobacco vendors, no spitting on the gallery steps. The Hero Honda Cup between India Vs England was played on 26th November 2008 in Barabati Stadium, Cuttack. To make this sports event smokefree Voluntary Heal;th Associoation of India- Aparajita facilitated the collaborative efforts of Commissionerate of Police, Orissa Cricket Association and Media. Smoking Banned in Public Places- The Public Notice is effective since 2nd October 2008. VHAI-Aparajita organized an anti tobacco campaign and ensured action of police to be taken in order to declare the Public Place -Stadium Smoke free during an international event. On this occasion VHAI focused on spreading messages on legal and health implications of tobacco use in the stadium. The Commissionerate of Police took all possible measures to spread the message among common people while enacting the Cigarrete and Tobacco law. Some important measures are taken to realize the aim of making the sports tobacco free.

-Awareness generation and campaign at the gate

-Ban on sale of tobacco products inside the stadium
-Ban on advertisement of cigarette and other tobacco products
-Campaign inside the gallery
-Wide media coverage
-Support from Orissa Cricket Association

The Project Manager VHAI-Aparajita Mr Shisir Ranjan Dash added that law can be more effective through friendly awareness. This cricket match is the right platform to spread the anti tobacco message. This is the stepping stone for Commissionerate of Police to start implementing the law full fledged. Mr Ranjeev Biswal, OCA expressed that this will add to the repute of OCA both nationally as well as internationally. OCA is all with the effort and will extend all its support to ban smoking in public place.
