State Level Public Information Campaign

A Public Information Campaign was organized at the state level in the District ,Jagatsinghpur from 15th December to 19th December2008 on Resurgent India. Member of the Parliament Shri. Brahmananda Panda inaugurated the event and appreciated the collector-cum-district magistrate Dr. Pramod Kumar Meherda for initiating such campaign. Dr.Pramod Kumar Meherda briefed about the aim and objective behind organizing this information campaign in Jagatsinghpur. Everybody has the right to information and he hoped that the people of Jagatsinghpur would be able get various information and thus enhance their knowledge and skill on various aspects throughout the campaign. He lamented over the growing use of tobacco products among young and adolescents and the tragic plight of Bidi workers in the district among which majority are small children. In an age when they should be sent to school, they are forced to roll bidis for added income and support to their poverty stricken parents..The collector expressed his deep concern and promises to take all possible measures in making the district tobacco free by March 2009.

MP,Jagatsinghpur Shri.Brahmananda Panda inaugurated our recently released book -Caught in a death Trap-A study on the Bidi Rollers of West Bengal and Gujrat ,based on first-hand in-depth research to develop an understanding of the lives and miseries of Bidi workers working in the un-organized and home based sector. The study clearly reveals the inhuman face of the Bidi Industry, there lies, deception and exploitation with a number of case studies and interviews. The release of the book followed by the screening of a documentary film -Turning Their Lives to Ashes-.The film shows that how the bidi industry has been able to make rolling as a home based activity and how the industry is exploiting thousands of children ruining their childhood and future. The show drew huge crowd and parents seemed to be more concerned about the safety and security of their children from the hazards of tobacco sickness but still hopelessly uttered as they don't have any alternative livelihood options.

Posters and leaflets were distributed among students and general public. Tobacco boards containing the health warnings and the legal provisions of COTPA were also displayed for spreading anti-tobacco messages among the people. The volunteers of Aparajita also took a session on economic and health hazards of tobacco use and the dangers of Second Hand Smoking and made the public aware on tobacco issues.
