World No Tobacco Day

On the occasion of World No Tobacco Day, Voluntary Health Association of India-Aparajita observed WNTD by conducting awareness programs on tobacco, exhibition on tobacco related health hazards and rallies in its operational areas i.e Kujang block of Jagatsinghpur district and Mahakalpara block of Kendrapara district.2 villages of Mahakalpara block namely Tikhiri, Mahanangala and 4 villages namely Mangarajpur,Lunukua,Tentulia and Mallipura have been covered. Volunteers, youth, adolescents, peer educators, Self Help Group Members and PRI members, attended the programme. The main objective of organizing World No Tobacco Day at the community level is to prevent youth and adolescents from falling prey to this deadly addiction and make them aware on the tobacco industries lies and deception, as the key to big tobacco extending its global reach has been aggressive marketing and advertising policy.

Rallies were organized in Tikhiri, Mahanangala, Lunukua, and Mangarajpur villages to make the people aware on the significance of World No Tobacco Day. The youths, peer educators, SHG leaders marched throughout the village holding placards and citing anti tobacco slogans. The Placards contained theme, "Say No To Tobacco & Say Yes to life" , "Choose life not tobacco", "Tobacco & Cancer made for each other", "Tobacco free Youth-Break the marketing net", "Lead a healthy life and Beat cancer", "Life is beautiful, Don't let it go up in smoke" etc. Children were dressed up in Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru and Mother India who took the lead during rallies and told each and every passerby to stay away from tobacco products and prevent themselves from cancer and asthma and the dangers of second hand smoking. The tiny tots also appealed the public and also the media to take charge of their health and help in creation of a healthy and smoke free environment.
