Smoke Free Bhubhaneshwar” and release of the Advocacy Brochure on Tobacco Control

The Orissa Government in collaboration with VHAI- Aparajita has initiated the work on Smoke free Bhubaneswar. This was declared in a state level advocacy event organized to release the Advocacy Brochure in Oriya on Tobacco Control. The Advocacy Brochure was released in an event by the Hon’ble speaker and was attended by the Health Minister, Jt Secretary, Health Secretary, Commissioner of Police and MLAs of the state.

Shri D P Behera, Joint Secretary to the Government of Orissa subsequently issued a notification to make Bhubaneshwar smoke-free by May 2010.Further he issued a written directive to all officers in charge of Government offices, private, banking, corporate and non-government organizations, managers of all public places, heads of educational institutes instructing them to extend cooperation to the government department and VHAI- Aparajita in taking up various steps to create awareness on COTPA amongst the public, including a Compliance Study to assess the current status and identify gaps and challenges in the implementation of the law.
