Creating Smokefree Environment
Smokefree Hotels, Banks and Government institutions: Initially Aparajita had discussed with the managers of some star hotels in Bhubaneswar and tried to convince them for creation of smoke free zones in the restaurants. The Hotels were initially reluctant to introduce the system because 90% customers having the smoking habit and they thought it might affect their business and also they did not have any knowledge of the tobacco law and its various provisions but later on they realized that this smoke free tag can give a boost to the hotels image as customer friendly and can attract more clients with family, relatives and kids. However hotels like Swosti, Ginger, The New Marion, Arya Palace, and Pal Heights agreed to be part of this anti tobacco drive in collaboration with VHAI-Aparajita.. Moreover this concept is appreciated at all levels including the media. It was highlighted in Times Of India and The Telegraph
We had also discussed with some Nationalized Banks, Non-Government Organizations, and other Government Offices (Panchayat offices, block offices, Health Dept.etc.),police commissionerate for smoke free zones and they agreed to join with us in this campaign. The hoteliers initiative has also inspired the Government to follow suit with the latter declaring some of its buildings like Rajiv Bahawan, An annex of the secretariat and the Directorate of Health Services as smoke free.
Till yet we have made 21 hotels,12 banks,45 police stations and 85 Government offices smoke free.
